METALLURGICAL FAILURE INVESTIGATION

Failure Analysis & Investigation

Metallurgical analysis, aimed at determining the nature and cause of failures, provides the basis for plant failure prevention strategies. Forensic investigations, using expertise in failure analysis and materials characteristics, are undertaken to revel critical evidence.

Based on identification of failure mechanisms and cost effective inspections, design modification are attainable to reduce the probability of further failures.
Successful remedial actions result from the knowledge gained through failure analysis.

Metallography

Microstructural evaluation is standard practice in most failure analysis because of the outstanding capability of the microscope of revealing material imperfections caused during processing and of detecting the results in various in service operation conditions and environments. That have contributed to the failure or degradation of the component.

Metaserv provides a comprehensive metallography service. From sample preparation and microstructural evaluation to documented evidence of the cause and modes of failure of the component in question.

Replication

Replication techniques are often used for the in-situ surface examination of critical engineering components. These methods are cost effective, reduce machine down time and can eliminate the need for further expensive, on-site inspection equipment. Further more replicas can be examined under laboratory conditions without having to remove test samples from the components under investigation.

Chemical Analysis

In many fields of the metals producing and processing industry it will often be necessary to identify and classify a material. In many case a simple chemical analysis of the material is suitable for identification.

Chemical analysis is often used to identify unknown materials and there grades. This is useful in failure investigations, checking of material types pre and post manufacture, as a quality control inspection tool and any other time a material is unidentified.

Routine analysis is recommended to ensure that the material is the one that was specified.
